Inxpect anticipates the future of radar-based smart sensors with ESSS and Ansys simulation
Inxpect, an Italian company specializing in intelligent radar sensors for industrial safety and robotics, relies on computer simulation as a fundamental tool in the development of its innovative technologies.
One of Inxpect’s main challenges is ensuring the reliable operation of its sensors in harsh industrial environments. Factors such as dust, smoke, and machine residues can affect the performance of conventional sensors.
To overcome these obstacles, Inxpect leverages advanced radar sensor technology and sophisticated algorithms capable of filtering environmental disturbances generated by industrial processes, reducing false alarms and increasing productivity. “Inxpect has reinvented an old technology—radar—to ensure that robots and machines can share spaces with humans safely and productively. For us, numerical simulation is a fundamental pillar, as it allows us to determine whether we are on the right track regarding the product’s functional parameters,” says Luca Salgarelli, co-founder and CEO of Inxpect.
To ensure the safety of operators who share spaces with machines and robots, Inxpect has developed safety radar sensors that accurately detect the presence of people in machine work areas. This monitoring prevents accidental restarts and ensures that equipment only operates when workers are outside the danger zone.
The role of simulation in sensor development
In its constant pursuit of innovation, Inxpect has adopted computer simulation as a key tool to tackle technological challenges and develop its projects. Ansys simulation allows the company to test and optimize products before manufacturing, making the process faster, more efficient, and cost-effective while significantly reducing time-to-market. “One of the greatest advantages of simulation is the ability to experiment without limits—whether by exploring new ideas, implementing different approaches, or modifying existing systems. Without simulation, this would require prototyping, leading to a significant increase in costs and development time,” explains Federico Papi, Senior RF Engineer at Inxpect.
By leveraging simulation, Inxpect can experiment with new ideas, implement different approaches, and modify existing systems in a virtual environment. “It’s like a crystal ball that allows us to see the future in real time,” says Luca Salgarelli. “It provides a window into the results, allowing us to visualize them even before we have the product in hand,” adds Federico Papi.
Multiphysics, electromagnetic, thermal, structural, vibration, signal processing, and EMC/EMI simulation tools can be used in the development and production of these sensors. “Simulation allows Inxpect to validate complex layouts in thermal environments for heat management in its devices, as well as analyze aspects related to electromagnetism, radio frequency circuits, antennas, and radomes. For each of these processes, Inxpect relies on advanced simulation tools to support its research and development activities,” says Federico Papi.
